Capturing Myself in 5 Photos

All of these personal images have caught the moments that I never want to forget... the ones that can be put together to create a more clear picture of myself through their unique perspectives and memories.

1. Michigan Game

October 20, 2012.

My lovely Aunt Christine surprised me with two football tickets to the game against Michigan State.  Overcast and cloudy, we arrive early to find our seats.  Yellow pom-pom in hand, I climb down a few rows of bleachers and smile up towards the camera.  I smell popcorn and feel the cold breeze blowing lightly against my cheeks.  It's game day, and the Wolverine in me is so grateful to be there as Michigan Stadium begins to fill up, in that special moment.

2. Oscoda, Michigan

July 31st, 2012.

In the middle of a hot summer afternoon, the sun beats down on our backs as my Mom and I walk down the same dirt paths as we do every July 31st.  It is her birthday, and as tradition follows, we drive the three hours up to our cabin on Lake Huron, and stop to wade with our bare toes in the amazingly refreshing current of the Au Sable River.  The smell of sticky sunblock and algae remain on us for the rest of the day -- Pure Michigan.

3. Lake Orion Sunset

June 29th, 2012.

The rare beauty of a stolen weekend at home.  On a spur of the moment drive over to Lake Orion with my best friend, we stop and sit in silence on a park bench as the dark water laps against the wooden breakwall at our feet.  The ducks bob their heads up and down under the water and we see the shapes of children playing on the grass across the water, hearing their shrieks of joy and laughter across an otherwise hushed lake.  I can only hope that they, like us, remember those stolen moments like that and the innocence of a perfect summer night.

4. Northwood III Community

April 28th, 2012.

Right after this picture was taken, the Northwood Crew went our separate ways. The trees are beginning to blossom, jackets are optional again, and finals are over -- but it's still hard to say our goodbyes.  The memories we have shared, from scary movie nights to star-tripping in the dark and talking in the gazebo until 2am, are the little things that can bring a smile to my face even at what seems like the worst of times.

5. A Day in the Arb

September 21st, 2013.

We laugh.  We jump.  We laugh again.

You can smell the pine trees in the background and the distinct smell of the river flowing to our right as we stop to capture the childlike joy on our faces.  Uri and I jump, counted down from 3...2...1...

It's quite an embarrassing picture.  But it captures my awkwardness perfectly.
