Recognizing Race

Our final project for the Writing Minor Gateway was to remediate an assignment into a new medium for our audience.  Previously I had created a lesson plan for students to learn about the role that race plays in their lives in the context of college freshmen.  Ultimately I decided to create and screen-cast a Prezi presentation made for a hypothetical freshman seminar at the University of Michigan, focused on identities and social justice.  With the goals of reaching freshmen in an engaging way and providing real-life applications to the concepts talked about in my previous paper, my presentation centered a lot on campus specific issues involving race and resources.

This project gave myself the opportunity to explore a variety of different technological features, such as iMovie, Prezi, and Lynda.com, and definitely gave me an introduction to new media writing.  Having never worked with text in this form, my project challenged me to play around with different forms and mediums in order to achieve the video that I wanted.  Ultimately I was extremely proud of the resulting video because of the different features (prezi, screenshotting,  video) that I was forced to learn and put together into a cohesive project as a writing minor.  I feel that this is a good example of the different forms of writing I can complete, and an example of my passion for social justice work on our campus in particular.
